Spring Break in Queensland Australia!!! - Day 1

The Pergandes headed to Australia for Spring Break to see the cousins and enjoy an Australia adventure. We made the 26 hour trek from Minnesota to Cairns, where our Australia cousins would meet us for 5 amazing days together in both Cairns and Fitzroy Island to experience the Great Barrier Reef. The Pergandes arrived safely at noon on Friday, March 27th.

We stayed at the Hides Hotel, dating back since the 1920s, and located in the center of Cairns. They made a mistake on our reservation and were lucky to be treated to two rooms for the price of one. It was a simple and friendly hotel. Every morning, we enjoyed an early breakfast on the veranda.

Our goal for our first day in Australia was to try and stay awake until the evening to help us get adjusted to the time change. After checking into our hotel, we took a city bus north to Holloway Beach, a local beach, with nets to keep out the dangerous jelly fish. We were pleasantly surprised to go swimming and enjoy the amazingly warm water. We swam, built sand tunnels, and had family races on the beach. A great first experience after leaving the cold weather of Minnesota.

It was really tough to stay awake. Both kids fell asleep on the bus ride back to the hotel. We then showered for dinner but both kids again fell asleep. This time for the night. While the kids slept, Ron and I headed out to Reef Teach, where certified marine biologists provided an overview on the Great Barrier Reef and the local marine life. It was interesting and informative but Ron and I also struggled to stay awake so we headed back to the hotel afterwards to get a full night's rest.
